    Model Based Automotive System Design: A Power Window Controller Case Study

    Modern day vehicles come equipped with a large number of sensors, actuators and ECU’s with sophisticated control algorithms, which requires engineering activities from various disciplines. An automotive system is developed in various stages with multiple stakeholders involved at each stage. Each stakeholder provides a distinct view point on system representation, which makes it challenging to bridge the gaps in developing a holistic understanding of the system functionality. The safety critical nature of automotive systems induces timing and dependability concerns that must be addressed at all stages. Furthermore, the relatively long development life-cycle of automotive systems makes it imperative to have a clear strategy for long term evolution. To deal with these challenges, model based techniques are applied in the industry for automotive systems development. System engineers use a suitable architecture description language (ADL) to represent the system architecture at several levels of abstraction. A number of system architecture description and software architecture standards have been developed in the automotive industry to streamline the development process. However, most of these standards are elaborate and need a fair amount of understanding before they can be applied. In this work, we explore the application of existing system architecture description and software architecture standards. Our main contribution is a Power Window Controller (PWC) system demonstrator that illustrates the methodology described by EAST-ADL and AUTOSAR. Through this case study, we intend to highlight the key aspects and gaps in the application of EAST-ADL & AUTOSAR. Starting from features and requirements, we have analyzed the impact of architectural decisions at each stage of automotive system development. We also performed Design verification, timing analysis & dependability analysis to ensure correctness of the system. Histopathology showed a choristoma of neural origin composed of glial cells--astrocytes in a fibrillary background, and a choroid plexus. Immunohistochemistry confirmed the findings

    The relationship between C-reactive protein and prognostic factors in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

    BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels and prognostic factors in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. METHODS: We studied 50 stable COPD patients with: spirometry, 6 minute walk distance, body mass index, GOLD stage (spirometric classification) and smoking status. In these patients hs-CRP values were measured and compared with those of 50 healthy controls. Then the serum hs-CRP was subjected to evaluation for any correlation with the predictors of outcomes in COPD subjects. RESULTS: Hs-CRP levels were higher in COPD patients than in controls (4.82 vs. 0.88 mg/L p < 0.01). Correlation was found between hs-CRP and the following variables: FEV(1) (r= −0.813; p < 0.01), 6MWD (r= −0.876; p < 0.01), body mass index (r= −0.710; p < 0.01), GOLD stage (r= 0.797, p < 0.01) and smoking status (r= 0.796; p < 0.01). Using multivariate analysis, FEV(1) and 6MWD showed the strongest negative association with hs-CRP levels. CONCLUSIONS: The circulating levels of the inflammatory marker hs-CRP are significantly elevated in patients with COPD, supporting the view that COPD is in part an inflammatory disorder. Hs-CRP levels in stable COPD patients are best correlated with FEV(1) and 6-minute walk distance (6MWD). This information should be considered when hs-CRP levels are measured in stable COPD patients

    Collaborating Diversity of Thought; Need of the Time

    Collective wisdom is a synergistic product derived from the diversity of thinking of various individuals having contrasting thoughts, views, opinions and outlook, thus proving essential to bring about qualitative improvements in the vast range of human activities. This paper sheds light on the fact that the human resource must capitalize on the assortment of thoughts and wisdom for overall advancement of the society. Keeping in view the above, different aspects of collaboration with regard to diversity of thought are considered. Detailed analysis elucidates that by elimination of impediments and strengthening of collaborative skills at individual and institutional level may prove remarkably beneficial. Steps should be taken for introducing development of collaborative skills as a training module in the education system to effectuate peace and harmony.     Composite split cord malformation associated with a dermal sinus tract, dermoid cyst, and epidural abscess: A case report and review of literature

    Background: Split cord malformation (SCM) is typically present at a single level but rarely, may be present at multiple levels in the spinal cord and can be associated with a wide array of lesions such as myelomeningoceles, lipomas, teratomas, and dermal sinus tracts (DSTs).Case description: We describe a case of a 15-month-old female child who presented with high-grade fever and progressive motor weakness in the lower limbs. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed the presence of SCM along with an epidural abscess, DST, and dermoid cyst. The child underwent surgery for excision of DST along with removal of the dermoid cyst and drainage of epidural abscess. The postoperative course was uneventful. Elective repair of the SCM was performed 4 weeks later. The postoperative course was uneventful again.Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, the combination of a composite SCM with a DST and dermoid cyst with associated epidural abscess has rarely been reported in literature

    Impacts of signal free corridors on the incidence of road traffic accidents in Karachi

    Increase in road Traffic Accidents is a global phenomenon and Pakistan is no exception. In Karachi, this problem becomes severe due to rapid growth of population. This menace is ruining the lives of thousands of people and making Karachi a worrisome place to live. Recent road geometrical transitions in the city with insufficient accessories have been reducing the problem of traffic congestion to a limited extent. On the contrary, this has erupted as a problem of Road Traffic Accidents which is reaching out of proportions. Recently, induction of a unique feature named, Signal Free Corridor in Karachi has cost many precious lives. In this paper GIS based analysis has been employed by using buffer technique to document the number of Road Traffic Accidents on four Signal Free Corridors, evaluated for five different years. It was revealed that the minor injury accidents were highest in all four Signal Free Corridors. However, in some cases number of severe and fatal road accident cases showed the emerging trend as well. Four types of road users were identified on these corridors out of which riders/pillion and pedestrians were the most vulnerable to Road Traffic Accidents. There is an emergent need to enforce the vehicle speed rules and regulations that would provide breathing time to traffic as well as reduce the incidents of consistent traffic blockages and rising Road Traffic Accidents

    Sentinel node localisation using pre-operative lymphoscintigraphy and intraoperative gamma probe in early oral cavity cancer

    Objectives: To assess the diagnostic value of sentinel lymph node localisation using pre-operative lymphoscintigraphy and intra-operative gamma probe radio localisation in Pakistani patients suffering from early stage squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity.Methods: The prospective case series was conducted between September 2007 and April 2010 at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi. It comprised patients with T1and T2 oral cavity cancer with clinically and radiologically negative neck. Pre-operative lymphoscintigraphy was performed one day before surgery and intra-operative gamma probe was used to detect sentinel node. Final histo-pathological evaluation was taken as the gold standard.Results: The study comprised 42 patients: 32(76%) males and 10(24%) females. The primary tumour site was buccal mucosa in 25 (60%) patients, and tongue in 17 (40%). Sentinel lymph node was detected in 38 (90%) patients.On final histopathological identification, 7 (17%) patients had cancer in the neck nodes. In all patients with metastasis, sentinel lymph node technique correctly identified the involved neck level. None of the patients revealed metastasis in non-sentinel lymph nodes.Conclusion: Evidence suggested the use of sentinel node biopsy in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
